Symbols & Traditions

The subject of symbols and traditions will be dealt with in a separate article on this website. We can provide only the basics because there is so much material to cover. After all, whole books have been written about the symbols one can find in a cemetery and about burial or gravesite traditions (see the Book References section). The photos in this category depict some of the symbols that we have found in our cemetery visits. Looking for symbols is part of the fun of a cemetery exploration (see the Scavenger Hunt). Suffice it to say that symbols are placed on or near tombstones to express a certain sentiment innocence, mortality, eternal life, status, honor, and so on. Of course, the popularity of certain symbols varies with the times.
